Imagine what it would be like to live in a world where nothing made sense, where you want to behave like everyone else, yet your behavior impulses and feelings do not fit into the world of your peers.  You want nothing more than to be ‘normal,’ to have friends, and to be respected.  At Walnut Springs Middle School, not only are these children respected, but their peers envy the work they do!

Unwanted
Dogs end up at animal shelters for many reasons often through no fault of their own, but the most common reason is behavior problems.  No matter what the reason, all shelter dogs have two things in common-they have been abandoned and they need a place to call home; a place where they can truly be man’s best friend.

United
Everyday the Kids ‘n’ Canines van pulls up to Walnut Springs Middle School loaded with what some would call the “unadoptable.”  No one knows better than a child with emotional disabilities that they just need someone to believe in them, someone who will take the time to help them flourish and grow.

Each student trainer is paired with a shelter dog and spends and hour and a half each day teaching the dog the skills that will allow it to become a well mannered canine companion.  Dogs that come to the program are untrained, and will be taught basic obedience skills to make them more adoptable.  The young trainers learn to teach in a kind, gentle way, and their dogs are rewarded for a job well done.  Students and their dogs learn that everyone deserves a chance.

Our dogs become well mannered canine companions with basic and companion skills while receiving the love and attention they so patiently wait for day after day in the shelter.  They learn to look at each person, not in fear, but as generous givers of affection and wonderful treats.

Kids ‘n’ Canines is more than just training dogs, it is about keeping our students motivated and achieving in school, and at the same time teaching them about responsibility, kindness, humanity and personal empowerment.  Our students increase their self-esteem as they develop pride in the important work they do.  It is about LIFE!
